Lectionary
United Methodist Church listing of the Lectionary, with links.
Instructions for the Liturgist for our church.
Background information about the Lectionary:
The UMC uses a lectionary based on the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), but adapted slightly for the needs of the Methodist church. For more information about the RCL, see the website of the Consultation on Common Texts (CCT), particularly their FAQ page. Another good source of information is the Vanderbilt Divinity Library's site on the Lectionary, and their FAQ page.
Various useful sites, but not particularly Methodist:
- Vanderbilt Divinity School site. An easy place to read and print the scriptures in each week's lectionary.
- Judy's Sunday School Site calendar lists the scriptures for each Sunday and her suggested Sunday school activities related to each, from a Lutheran Church perspective. Children aged about 9 or older could explore this site on their own and learn much about the Bible and the traditions of the church.
- The Text This Week. Highlights the Revised Common Lectionary. Various alternative scriptures are listed which are used by the Roman Catholic and Episcopal churches. There are links to various versions of the scriptures, including the NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) Bible, which we use.
- Daily readings. The Revised Common Lectionary does not include prescribed daily readings. This lectionary resource is provided by the office of Worship, Theology, and Discipleship, of the General Assembly Council of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
- Lectionary website includes many resources and has links to various other websites.
Various websites offer commentaries on the lectionary. Find a variety of these by searching on "lectionary" and exploring.
