The Season of Advent

During the Holy Season of Advent we prepare for the entry of the light of Christ into the world. Over the four weeks of Advent, we celebrate the progression of our spiritual journey, culminating with the coming of Christ. We symbolize our progression through our spiritual journey with the lighting of the Advent candles on the Advent wreath. Each week we light one more candle, to symbolize another stage in our journey.

First week of Advent: Expectation, anticipation, distant longing, crying out

Second week of Advent: Hope, immediate expectation

Third week of Advent: Joy, proclamation

Fourth week of Advent: Purity, praise, celebration

On Christmas Eve, we celebrate the entrance of Christ into the world by lighting the Christ Candle and begin the Christmastide celebration season.

The Church year begins with the two cycles:

Advent / Christmastide / Epiphany

Lent / Eastertide / Pentecost

The remaining part of the year is Ordinary Time.
